Funeral Mass Scheduled for Beloved Former Akron Teacher


Joseph J. Hogan, 83 of Corfu, died Friday (October 30, 2009) at Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Hospital in Buffalo.

He was born in Lowell, Mass. on July 16, 1926 a son of the late Timothy B. and Catherine Barrington Hogan.

Mr. Hogan was a math teacher at Akron Central School for over 20 years and also taught at Gowanda Central and Newman High in Williamsville. He was a missionary with the Oblates of Mary Immaculate Order from 1952 to 1970 having served most of his mission life in Brazil. He enjoyed gardening, reading, philosophy, theology, history and politics. He had a deep appreciation of nature and was a life long Boston Red Sox Fan.

He resided in Corfu for over 30 years with his wife, Elizabeth Seereiter Hogan whom he married over 35 years ago on June 29, 1974. Together they served as foster parents to 25 children over a nine year period.

Surviving besides his wife is a daughter Patricia A. Hogan of Cheektowaga. A grandson, Anthony J. Ferris II. A sister, Sister Timothy Marie (Anna Hogan) of the Sisters of Charity of Halifax of Lawrence Mass. Two brothers, Thomas P. (Teresa) Hogan of Lowell, Mass. and William T. Hogan of Chelmsford, Mass. Several nieces and nephews also survive. He is the brother of the late Katherine Edwards.

There are no calling hours. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at Resurrection Parish (St. Joseph Church site) on Thursday, November 5th at 9:30 AM. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Those desiring may make memorial contributions to a charity of the donors preference.

Arrangements are entrusted to the J. Leonard McAndrew Funeral Home, 2 Bogue Ave., Batavia. Ronald P. Konieczny, director & veteran.
