Telephone scam reported
The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office has reported another telephone scam involving the potential winning of a lottery for $1,200,000.00
A Village of Corfu resident received a telephone call on the complainant’s cellular telephone from a person claiming to be affiliated with the Goldrush Women’s Organization. When the complainant asked for the caller’s name, he identified himself as a Detective Brown who claimed to be in law enforcement and that this lottery is 100 percent verified with the United States Government.
Residents should be aware during the Holiday season of these types of scams in which someone will tell you that you have won an amount of money and will receive it if you provide personal and account information to the scammers.
Some of these scams ask potential targets to provide advance payments (insurance, shipping, handling, etc. charges) in order to obtain the “Winnings.” The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office cautions residents not to respond to these inquiries and to report incidents to local police agencies.
