The Akron Central School Tiger Marching Band will march in the Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom this evening. The Orchestra performed in Downtown Disney on Friday night to an enthusiastic audience despite very cold temperatures and blustery winds know well to Winnie the Pooh. The Band held an early morning dress rehearsal Sunday, in preparation for their evening performance.
A cane, missing since June, was recently located and arrested. Coach Dick
"The Destroyer" Beyer, who should have custody of the cane, lost track of
it while working on one of the many community projects in which he is
involved.
Inquiries as to the "stick figure" cane’s whereabouts had not surfaced a
location until Tuesday when the cane turned itself into the Akron Police
Department, admitting to "raising cane" in numerous locations throughout the
village.
The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash which occurred on Route 5 in the Town of Pembroke at approximately 4:52 p.m. on February 17.
The preliminary investigation indicates that a 2001 Saturn Suburban operated by 80-year-old Mario J. Micciche of 80 Golden Pond Estates, Akron, NY was westbound when the driver apparently lost control in snow storm conditions.
The Saturn traveled into the eastbound lane, sliding sideways where it was struck in the passenger side by an eastbound 2003 Ford Taurus operated by 55-year-old Deborah B. Osborne of 8896 Fargo Road Stafford, New York.
Mr. Micciche was transported to ECMC with serious injuries. His passenger, 80-year-old Audrey E. Micciche, was transported to UMMC where she was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival. Ms. Osborne, who was alone in her vehicle, was taken to UMMC where she was being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
A City of Buffalo man was arrested on December 7 at 7:38 p.m. in the Town of Newstead.
Sheriff Timothy B. Howard reports the man was arrested for Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Harassment following a domestic incident with his girlfriend in her Town of Newstead residence.
Late Tuesday night, unofficial numbers indicated the party make-up of the
Newstead Town Board remained three Democrats and two Republicans, although two new faces join this legislative body.
Seeking one of the two open Town Councilman seats were Richard Baron, Adam Burg, Tom Grimm, and Jim Mayrose. The two candidates receiving the highest number of votes are elected to those seats. Councilman Tom George and Councilman Harold Finger, both Republicans, did not seek reelection.
Unofficial numbers at press time put Mayrose with 1019 votes, Grimm with
828, (both endorsed by the Republican party) Baran with 814, and Burg with 641 (both endorsed by the Democrats). Absentee ballots had not been counted.
The New York State Thruway Authority today announced that State Police Troop T and citizen volunteers will once again start "Pumpkin Patrols" statewide this Halloween week. The patrols, which began in 1976, are meant to prevent dangerous Halloween pranks and protect travelers along the 641-mile NYS Thruway.
Applause greeted the option of "no build" in the Thruway Authority's presentation at a public hearing held at Akron Central School Tuesday night regarding the proposed relocation of the Williamsville Toll Barrier to the Town of Newstead.
The Authority's preferred alternative at mile marker 408 met with a number of concerns from local residents and officials.

State Senator Mary Lou Rath has announced that the Town of Newstead and Village of Akron will receive some of an additional $129,000 in Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPs) funding over last year for northern Erie County secured as part of the 2006-2007 State Budget.
CHIPs dollars provide municipalities with financial support for the construction and repair of highways, bridges, highway-railroad crossings and other roadways not located in the state highway system.

Sheriff Timothy B. Howard reported the arrest of a Village of Akron man for unlawfully dealing with a child, first degree and unlawful possession of alcohol on June 1 at 3:51 a.m.
Erie County Sheriff's Deputies Gene Nati and Daniel Brinkerhoff responded to East Avenue in the Village of Akron for a report of two males lying in the street. Upon arrival, Deputies found an eighteen-year-old and fifteen year old male walking down East Ave. and the two were questioned.
It was discovered that the two males were “hanging out” and drinking alcohol together, and that the eighteen-year-old, from East Ave. in the Village, had supplied the alcohol. The 18 year-old was arrested and charged with unlawfully dealing with a child in the first degree (A misdemeanor) and unlawful possession of alcohol by a person under 21 years of age (Violation).
Three 55-gallon containers of marijuana were confiscated Saturday evening, February 13, 2010 in the Village of Akron and a Newton St. resident was arrested in what Akron Police Chief Rick Lauricella is reporting as the largest drug bust ever made in the village.
The Akron Police Department was called to the residence of 49-year-old Marshall Pann relative to a domestic incident. They received information that led them to believe drugs were in the home and, when they returned with a search warrant, found the marijuana in the basement. Chief Lauricella reports the amount found of the drug would cover a 6-foot banquet table two feet deep.
New York State Police in Clarence arrested a 26 year old female residing at 62 Main Street, Akron, New York on October 16, for five counts of Rape 2nd, one count Sexual Criminal Act 2nd (all D Felonies) and six counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
She was arraigned in the Village of Akron Court, and was remanded to the Erie County Holding Center in lieu of $100,000 bail and was ordered to surrender her passport.

New York State Police in Clarence have announced the arrest of two Akron men for inappropriately opening fire hydrants in the Town of Newstead in the early morning hours of November 30, 2008.
A twenty-five year old male and nineteen year old male, both of Akron, New York were charged with Criminal MIschief in the second degree and Criminal Nuisance in the second degree.
State Police say the two young men opened up several fire hydrants in the northern section of the Town of Newstead. These hydrants remained open for several hours and the Erie County Water Authority has estimated that the total water loss was approximately 2.558 million gallons of water with a value of $6,133.40.

The Erie County Board of Elections has declared a winner in the contest between Mark Decker and Daric Brege for a two-year term as Councilman on the Newstead Town Board.
The race to fill the Councilman term, left vacant by the resignation of Joan Glor at the end of 2004, was too close to call on election night. On Wednesday, November 23, The Board of Elections counted the paper ballots cast in the election and added them to the machine votes.
Mr. Decker was named the winner with 1232 total votes to Mr. Brege's 1190 . Election night numbers had Mark Decker, currently serving in the position, with 1163 votes and challenger Daric Brege with 1150, with the paper ballots yet to be counted.
The proposed cut of twelve and a half positions at Akron Central School - including an administrator, librarian, one elementary school, one elementary specials, and a math, science, art, business, foreign language, and English teacher - is drawing comments from the public.
Budget Advisory Committee members learned of the proposed cuts at their meeting Wednesday night, March 31. It was the first time in the budget process they received information on the full extent of cuts needed in light of anticipated state aid cuts and the proposed distribution of those cuts.
The BAC met again on Tuesday, April 6, and after nearly three hours of reviewing the proposed budget line by line, and discussions over the importance of the Elementary School librarian, they affirmed the budget as presented with a strong recommendation that the Board of Education look at other areas to cut and the potential of increasing the tax levy by no more than 4.95 percent to reinstate the Elementary School librarian and put a full-time aide in the Elementary School computer lab.

The Genesee County Sheriff's office is investigating a homicide, which occurred during the evening hours of Monday, February 16, 2009 at 683 Knapp Road, Akron, New York 14001. The residence maintains an Akron address and is located just inside the Town of Pembroke in Genesee County.
The Genesee County Sheriff's Office has received information that "Traveler" or "Gypsy" activity may be occurring in the area. The Genesee County Sheriff's Office is investigating a serious personal injury motorcycle accident that occurred on Bloomingdale Road, in the Town of Alabama.
The Genesee County Emergency Dispatch Center received a 9-1-1 call of a single motorcycle accident on Bloomingdale Road near Parker Road, on the Tonawanda Indian Reservation, at approximately 5:18 p.m. August 14.
Initial investigation indicates the 1997 Harley Davidson motorcycle, operated by Calvin A. Buchanan, age 48, of Casey Road, Alabama, NY was westbound on Bloomingdale Road when it failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway. The motorcycle drove off the north shoulder of the highway where Mr. Buchanan lost control of the motorcycle and was ejected.
More vocalists are welcome to join the Community Chorus preparing a tribute concert to the late Candy Kruschke, Akron Central School Vocal and Music teacher who died this summer.

Henry J. Kreher, farmer and farmland protection advocate died at home on Wednesday, October 24, 2007 at the age of 83.
Mr. Kreher was born in Buffalo on July 14, 1924.
Sheriff Timothy B. Howard reports that a 25-year-old man of Main Road, Newstead was charged with Falsely Reporting an Incident in the 3rd Degree, after he phoned in a report of a male and female involved in a fight outside of 13369 Steiner Rd.
Voters, turning out in large numbers, elected a new Town of Newstead Supervisor and Highway Superintendent. One Councilman's race is still too close to call.

Re-construction of the Parkview Drive bridge may take place in 2009 according to information from Erie County Legislator Michael Ranzenhofer's office.
The project is now a Federal Aid project and will be eighty percent funded by a Federal grant, with fifteen percent paid for by New York State and five percent by Erie County. Funding for the county's share of the $1.967 million is included in the approved 2008 budget.
Work on the bridge, which has been closed to traffic since 2003, has been put on hold due to a lack of funding in both the 2006 and 2007 county budgets.
As a federal aid project, reconstruction will proceed according to the rules and regulations of the Locally Administered Federal Aid Projects program of the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT.)
Carl Patterson was elected Mayor of the Village of Akron Tuesday.
Mr. Patterson, currently serving as Trustee received 339 votes. Also seeking election was local businessman Millard Young who ran a write-in campaign. Mr. Young received 246 votes. Five other residents received one write in vote each.
Trustee Michael R. Middaugh was returned to office with 438 votes. Newly elected to the Board is Planning Board Chairperson Kathryn A. Capan with 414 votes.
Joseph Matusek received 271 votes and Michael Schilling received 189.
Akron Pharmacy, Main Street, Akron, NY is experiencing difficulties with their main telephone line.

As of Sunday night, power had been restored to 99.9 percent of the Village of Akron, although many customers may still be experiencing problems, Superintendent of Public Works Robert Kowalik said Monday.

The New York State Thruway Authority today announced that the Williamsville Barrier Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) has been formally accepted by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The DEIS identifies the preferred alternative, which is to relocate the barrier from its present location to the Town of Newstead, Erie County, between Interchanges 48A and 49. The proposed new facility would be located between North Millgrove Road and South Newstead Road in the Town of Newstead.
Akron Central School District residents approved a building project to address infrastructure, music education, special education, and physical education needs during a special vote on Thursday.
Village Board members are seeking public comment on the possible elimination of the Village Justice position and consolidation of the Village court with the Town of Newstead Court.
The public is invited to attend the Village Board meeting on Monday, February 2 to voice their comments, to send written comments, or to answer this survey. Results will be shared with the Village Board.

A two car motor vehicle accident in the Town of Newstead has left two females hospitalized. A Clarence woman was extricated from her vehicle with the jaws of life and was transported by Mercy Flight to ECMC where she remains in critical condition after crossing over into oncoming traffic and striking a 73 year old Akron woman who is currently listed in serious condition also at ECMC.
(EIS) -- The New York State Thruway Authority and State Police Troop T have announced that "Operation Summer Brake" will take place Wednesday, August 23, 2006 through Sunday, August 27, 2006.
School Resource Officers, including "Trooper Vic" at Akron Central School, will remain at school assignments under the new New York State budget.
Superintendent of Schools Robin Zymroz told Board of Education members Wednesday night that the budget left the School Resource Officer program in place. The proposed executive budget had called for the redeployment of State Police assigned to that program to high crime areas.
State Senator Mary Lou Rath is urging the removal of the toll at Interchange 49 (Transit Road) once the current Williamsville Toll Barrier has been moved to the east.
According to a letter from Michael Fleischer, Executive Director of the New York State Thruway Authority, the Authority has identified ways to remove the toll at Interchange 49. It will now wait for a local recommendation from the Greater-Buffalo-Niagara Regional Transportation Council (GBNRTC).

A single vehicle accident in the Town of Royalton on Sunday night, May 4, has claimed the life of an eighteen-year-old Akron man.

The New York State Thruway Authority today (June 26, 2006) announced that in an effort to seek as much publicparticipation in the Williamsville Toll Barrier Improvement Project as possible, it has extended the formal comment period to Monday, August 21, 2006. Originally the comment period was scheduled to end on Monday, July 24, 2006.
Genesee County Sheriff Gary T. Maha has issued a Travel Advisory for all roads in Genesee County due to very limited visibility and slippery roads resulting from blowing and drifting snow.
