Annual Cake Bake held

ANNUAL CAKE BAKE – Akron Cub Scout Pack 531 held their annual Cake Bake at the Akron Elementary cafeteria on Thursday, January 15.

Ice Rescue training conducted in realistic conditions

An ice covered pond, snow covered surroundings, and bitter cold temperatures created the perfect setting for ice rescue training last Saturday. Akron and Newstead volunteer fire company members gathered indoors for the “academics” and then crawled into the appropriate outerwear to test their skills outside in the elements.

As temperatures drop, Recreation Dept. programs heat up

With frigid temperatures expected across WNY this week, the Newstead Recreation Department programs are still heating up with a variety of opportunities for youth and adults alike in the community to get out of the house and get into some “fitness and fun!”

Community involvement in afterschool program sought

Help from the community is welcome as the C. Dee Wright Community Center revisits introducing a Homework/afterschool program.

Computer Coding class suggested at Akron Central

Over 110 students participated in an “Hour of Code” initiative at Akron Central which was part of a national effort to create awareness among students of computer code and its applications. Teacher Bob Meek organized the local event and reported to Board of Education members at their meeting on January 15 that the response of students who participated was 96 percent positive.
